The Zombie Apocalypse has occurred.

No one has any real idea why, but several theories/rumors persist. The strongest are as follows:

  • Virus, engineered by a government body for use as a biological weapon. Despite their attempts, it still broke out.
  • Terrorist attack. The outbreak is the result of a biological attack by a hostile entity.
  • Lab accident. Some scientists were conducting experiments that had gone horribly wrong. Something mutated and got out. What they were working on produced as varied rumors as many of the other primary theories. One belief is that they were working on a way to regenerate tissue rapidly. Others say they were trying to get ‘dead’ body parts, such as those suffering from frostbite and gang green. Others say that it was meant to be a cure for paralysis.
  • A parasite which delves into the brain or other part of the body. Some new, very small, organism has the zombies transfer its eggs via saliva into the new victim. This would enter the victim’s blood and convert them post-mortem. It is also possible that the zombie transfers the parasite post-mortem.
  • God’s plague upon the world. The wrath of a divinity has caused the dead to return to the realm of the living.
  • Magic/Voodoo. Some dark power has unleashed this horrid curse upon the world.

How the zombies transfer the infection is unclear. Most people do not stick around with the corpses of those who have died from zombie attack. What does seem to be the case though, is that those who have not been bitten don’t tend to transform.

The zombies are for the most part the same, with the occasional missing limb or major laceration to tell them apart. They more or less stay the same shape as their host, but are obviously much more decayed. While physically they all seem identical, some people have claimed to have seen zombies do extraordinary things. There are rumors of all kinds of about the zombies, but like half of the information derived from NPCs, they could be just rumors or ravings. Zombies do not move very fast, about a walking speed, but they do not tire. They tend to be in small to large mobs, but don’t appear to be communicating or acting too clever.

Just how much of the world is gone remains a mystery. It could only be local, i.e. the city or state is gone, but the rest of the country is more or less intact. A much grimmer possibility is that the entire planet has been taken over. Because the surrounding area is so ravaged, there is no real way of telling just how far this plague unto the world has spread. Outside sources, if they exist, have no way of communicating reliably with any survivors in the state. The outside world could have also given up hope on finding any survivors. Electricity is more or less gone. With no one to run the power plants, they have shut down. Battery power devices still work, but a lot of batteries are dead by now because they get used up. A lot of devices which relied on infrastructures, such as the internet, are down. Some radio towers could still theoretically run off of other generators.

Most cars no longer have gas, or are otherwise broken. Many people had tried to leave by car, but either ran out of gas, were attacked by zombies (killing the crew), or had the car take enough damage that it no longer works. Many cars have already been drained of their fuel, but it is now so valuable that it is often worth it to try and drain them regardless. Even if this fuel is not used, it can be used for trading with NPCs.

Guns and ammunition are extremely valuable at this point. However, many guns have simply run out of ammo. For this reason, players may find their guns rendered useless. The players will have to decide whether or not to bring the guns with them, or if it is worth it to carry worthless ammunition. Like fuel, ammunition also makes for a good currency for trading.

Writing will be on the walls of some buildings. These writings might mention the promise land, and be directions. Others will be notes to the players from NPCs. Some writings will just be the crazed notes of those spiraling into insanity. Others will just be notes about the apocalypse. For the most part, the writings will be in paint, or carved into the wall. Crosses will be somewhat common on doors, etc. as the citizens would paint it on to try to ward off the zombies, without much success.

Painted circles or Xs will be on a lot of doors or other goods, such as cars. This is a pretty standard sign, it means that the place is either occupied or already

Water is not an issue, primarily because it would just be aggravating to have to keep track of.

The players will be following a very long road to get where they are trying to go. There will be about a hundred feet or so of mostly clear grass on either side of the road, but the amount would continually be changing. Past the clear patches tends to be rather thick woods.

There are some more urban areas, but they are often best avoided because they tend to have rather dense crowds of zombies.

It is not terribly rare, though still uncommon, for players to find small dead squads of soldiers. Often the weapons will be stripped by other raiders, though sometimes some goods will be missed.

After that, take a look at your wiki. There is some more helpful info there.
